About This Event

“Get your balance of payments onto BPM7 cleanly, before the first submission is due.”

A hands-on workshop updating external sector compilers on the seventh edition of the Balance of Payments and International Investment Position Manual. You will work through the key changes from BPM6, including digitalisation, crypto assets, sustainable finance and globalisation, and plan how to update sources, methods and published tables.

What You'll Explore

A BPM7 transition plan for your institution's external statistics

A reference sheet of the main BPM6 to BPM7 recording changes

Worked treatments for crypto assets and digitally delivered services

A consistency check linking BOP, IIP and external debt data

A user communication outline for series breaks and revisions

Who Should Attend

Open to all qualifying staff, particularly: BOP & IIP Compilers, External Debt Statisticians, Reserves Data Staff, External Sector Economists, Statistics Department Managers.

Why This Course Matters

BPM7 Readiness

BPM7 changes how crypto assets, digital services and green finance are recorded. Knowing the changes early lets your team schedule system and survey updates without disrupting releases.

Comparable Data

Investors, rating agencies and the IMF compare your external accounts with other countries. Moving to BPM7 on time keeps your data comparable and your country's position clearly understood.

Fewer Revisions

Planning the transition carefully avoids breaks in series and large back-revisions. Stable series mean policymakers can rely on external data when judging reserves and exchange rate pressure.

Programme

Day 1

BPM7 overview & the case for the update

You will review the structure of BPM7, how it aligns with SNA 2025, and the main conceptual changes from BPM6 that affect current, capital and financial account recording.

Day 2

Current account: digital trade & globalisation

You will apply BPM7 treatments to digitally delivered services, merchanting, goods sent for processing and multinational enterprise arrangements in the current account.

Day 3

Financial account, IIP & crypto assets

You will classify crypto assets, stablecoins and new financial instruments, and update financial account and international investment position recording under the revised framework.

Day 4

Reserve assets, external debt & sustainable finance

You will revisit reserve asset criteria, external debt linkages and the new sustainable finance presentations, and check consistency between BOP, IIP and external debt statistics.

Day 5

Transition planning & data source review

You will build a BPM7 transition plan for your institution, covering surveys, administrative sources, back-casting and user communication, and present it for peer review.

Standards & Faculty Benchmark

IMF BPM7

The seventh edition of the Balance of Payments and International Investment Position Manual.

UN SNA 2025

The updated System of National Accounts, harmonised with BPM7 concepts and classifications.

External Debt Statistics Guide (2013)

Inter-agency guide for compiling gross external debt positions consistent with the IIP.

The IMF, investors and rating agencies will read your external accounts on a BPM7 basis. Aligning your compilation to it now keeps your data comparable with peers and means your transition is planned rather than rushed to meet a reporting deadline.

Is This Right for You?

  • ☑You compile BOP, IIP or external debt statistics
  • ☑Your institution is preparing its move from BPM6 to BPM7
  • ☑You want the changes explained through practical cases

Good to Know

Designed for compilers already working with BPM6-based statistics; familiarity with BOP and IIP concepts is assumed. You leave with a BPM7 transition plan for your own institution and a reference sheet of the main recording changes.

The Bottom Line

Leave with a BPM7 transition plan your team can start the following week, and the treatments to carry it through.

Recommended For

Open to all qualifying staff, particularly: BOP & IIP Compilers, External Debt Statisticians, Reserves Data Staff, External Sector Economists, Statistics Department Managers.
