About This Event
“Make your monetary statistics the numbers every policy meeting trusts.”
An advanced regional workshop on monetary and financial statistics compilation. You will go beyond the basics of the monetary survey to cover other financial corporations, sectorisation and valuation challenges, financial derivatives, and the integration of MFS with the balance of payments, government finance and national accounts.
What You'll Explore
A financial corporations survey template covering OFCs
A sectorisation decision guide for difficult institutional cases
A treatment note on valuation changes and financial derivatives
A cross-dataset reconciliation checklist for MFS, BOP and GFS
A data quality review of your institution's current MFS
Who Should Attend
Open to all qualifying staff, particularly: MFS Compilers, Senior Statisticians, Monetary Analysts, Balance Sheet Data Managers, Statistics Department Heads.
Why This Course Matters
Wider Coverage
Extending coverage to insurers, pension funds and other financial corporations gives a truer picture of credit. Fuller coverage means monetary analysis reflects where lending is really happening.
Consistent Accounts
Reconciling MFS with BOP, GFS and national accounts exposes gaps and errors early. Consistent data across datasets avoids awkward revisions once the numbers reach a policy committee.
Handling Complex Cases
Valuation changes, derivatives and sectorisation disputes are where compilers most often go wrong. Clear treatments mean your statistics stay reliable when balance sheets become more complex.
Programme
Day 1
MFSMCG 2016 refresher & advanced sectorisation
You will revisit the MFSMCG framework and work through difficult sectorisation cases, including public corporations, special purpose entities and holding companies.
Day 2
OFCs & the financial corporations survey
You will compile data for insurers, pension funds and other financial corporations, and build a financial corporations survey that extends analysis beyond deposit takers.
Day 3
Valuation, derivatives & other flows
You will separate transactions from revaluations and other volume changes, and apply correct treatments to financial derivatives, provisions and foreign-currency positions.
Day 4
Integration with BOP, GFS & national accounts
You will reconcile MFS with balance of payments, government finance and financial accounts data, and build cross-checks that flag inconsistencies before publication.
Day 5
Standardised report forms, SDMX & quality review
You will prepare standardised report forms, review metadata and SDMX transmission, and apply a DQAF-style data quality review to your own institution's MFS, agreeing fixes before release.
Standards & Faculty Benchmark
IMF MFSMCG 2016
The Monetary and Financial Statistics Manual and Compilation Guide, the core MFS methodology.
IMF BPM7 & SNA 2025
External and national accounts standards used to reconcile MFS with other datasets.
IMF Data Standards (e-GDDS, SDDS)
IMF dissemination standards setting coverage, periodicity and timeliness for MFS.
The IMF reviews your monetary statistics against MFSMCG and its data standards. Compiling to the same methodology keeps your submissions consistent with regional peers and makes your statistics easier to defend in technical assistance and Article IV reviews.
Is This Right for You?
- ☑You compile MFS or manage standardised report forms
- ☑Your institution is extending coverage to non-bank sectors
- ☑You need answers to the hard cases, not the basics
Good to Know
Pitched at compilers with working experience of the monetary survey and standardised report forms; this is not an introductory course. You leave with a financial corporations survey template and a cross-dataset reconciliation checklist.
The Bottom Line
Return with monetary statistics that are wider, more consistent and ready for any external review.
