About This Event

“Build monetary statistics your policy committee and the IMF read the same way.”

A two-week blended programme on compiling monetary statistics for the central bank and other depository corporations to international standards, with a self-paced online variant. You will classify balance sheets by sector and instrument, build the depository corporations survey and report through the IMF's standardised report forms.

What You'll Explore

A mapped central bank balance sheet classified by sector and instrument

A compilation workbook for the ODC and depository corporations surveys

Draft standardised report forms ready for IMF submission

A data-quality checklist with cross-checks against BOP and fiscal data

A clear definition of broad money suited to your financial system

Who Should Attend

Open to all qualifying staff, particularly: Monetary Statistics Compilers, Statistics Department Staff, Balance Sheet & Accounting Officers, Research Economists, Data Quality Officers.

Why This Course Matters

Clean Sector Classification

Monetary aggregates are only as good as the sector and instrument classification beneath them. Getting classification right is what stops broad money being misstated when new institutions enter the system.

Policy-Ready Aggregates

Accurate central bank and depository corporations surveys feed directly into policy analysis and forecasting. Reliable aggregates mean the policy committee is not second-guessing the numbers it relies on.

International Comparability

Reporting through the IMF's standardised report forms makes your data comparable with peers worldwide. That comparability supports IMF programme reviews and the confidence of investors reading your data.

Programme

Days 1–2

The MFSMCG framework, sectors & financial instruments

You will work through the concepts of the IMF Monetary and Financial Statistics Manual and Compilation Guide, including institutional sectors, residency and the classification of financial instruments.

Days 3–4

The central bank survey & central bank balance sheet

You will map your central bank's accounts to standard sector and instrument categories, handling tricky items such as SDR holdings, valuation adjustments and claims on government.

Days 5–6

Other depository corporations & the ODC survey

You will compile the other depository corporations survey from commercial bank returns, dealing with deposit-taking microfinance, mobile money trust accounts and consolidation issues.

Days 7–8

The DCS, monetary aggregates & other financial corporations

You will combine the surveys into the depository corporations survey, define broad money for your economy and extend coverage towards other financial corporations such as insurers and pension funds.

Days 9–10

Standardised report forms, data quality & dissemination

You will prepare standardised report forms for IMF submission, run cross-checks against BOP and government finance data and set out a dissemination calendar aligned to SDDS or e-GDDS.

Standards & Faculty Benchmark

IMF MFSMCG (2016)

The IMF Monetary and Financial Statistics Manual and Compilation Guide, the global compilation reference.

IMF Standardized Report Forms (SRFs)

The IMF reporting templates for central bank, ODC and OFC data used in International Financial Statistics.

IMF SDDS & e-GDDS

The IMF data dissemination standards that set coverage, periodicity and timeliness for monetary data.

The MFSMCG and SRFs are the benchmark the IMF uses when it reviews your monetary data in Article IV consultations and programme work. Compiling to them now means fewer data queries, faster review cycles and figures external users accept at face value.

Is This Right for You?

  • ☑You compile or review monetary statistics at your central bank
  • ☑Your institution is migrating to or improving SRF reporting
  • ☑You need to bring new institutions into your monetary aggregates

Good to Know

Aimed at compilers and analysts with basic accounting knowledge; no MFS training is assumed. The self-paced online variant suits staff who cannot travel. You leave with a mapped central bank balance sheet, a compilation workbook and a data-quality checklist for your own returns.

The Bottom Line

Leave with monetary statistics built to the IMF standard, ready for your policy committee and your next Article IV mission.
