About This Event
“Design the payment system your economy needs next, not the one it outgrew.”
An advanced one-week course for experienced payments staff on how payment systems are designed, overseen and modernised. You will examine RTGS renewal, ISO 20022 migration, fast payments and interoperability, and the oversight and governance choices that decide whether a modernisation programme delivers safer, cheaper and more inclusive payments.
What You'll Explore
A payment-system modernisation roadmap tested in peer review
An RTGS renewal and ISO 20022 migration planning checklist
A comparison of fast payment models and interoperability rules
An oversight approach for non-bank participants and third parties
A view of how the G20 roadmap targets apply to your market
Who Should Attend
Open to all qualifying staff, particularly: Heads of Payment Systems, Senior Payment System Overseers, National Payments Council Members, RTGS Operations Managers, Payments Policy Staff.
Why This Course Matters
Modernisation With Purpose
RTGS renewal, ISO 20022 and fast payments are large, multi-year investments. Clear design choices up front mean the new system meets policy goals rather than simply replacing old technology.
Interoperable Payments
Mobile money, banks and fintechs often run in separate silos that keep costs high. Interoperability design lets customers pay anyone, and brings more of the economy into the formal payment system.
Oversight That Keeps Pace
New participants and instant settlement bring new risks faster than traditional rules can catch them. Updated oversight lets innovation happen without the central bank losing sight of systemic risk.
Programme
Day 1
Payment system design choices & trade-offs
You will compare RTGS, deferred net settlement and hybrid designs, weighing liquidity savings, settlement risk and cost, and set out the policy objectives a national payments strategy should serve.
Day 2
RTGS renewal & ISO 20022 migration
You will plan an RTGS renewal programme, covering liquidity-saving mechanisms, participant access and ISO 20022 migration, including the data and testing work that is usually underestimated.
Day 3
Fast payments, interoperability & inclusion
You will examine fast payment system models, scheme rules and interoperability between banks, mobile money and fintechs, using regional cases to judge what drives adoption and lower costs.
Day 4
Advanced oversight: PFMI, new entrants & cyber risk
You will apply the PFMI and oversight tools to modern systems, assessing access for non-bank participants, operational and cyber risk, and the oversight of critical third-party service providers.
Day 5
Modernisation roadmap & peer review
You will build a payment-system modernisation roadmap for your jurisdiction, with sequencing, governance and stakeholder engagement, and defend it under challenge from peers and faculty.
Standards & Faculty Benchmark
CPMI-IOSCO PFMI
The principles used to assess the safety and efficiency of systemically important payment systems.
ISO 20022 Financial Messaging
The global messaging standard behind RTGS renewal and cross-border payments modernisation.
G20 Cross-Border Payments Roadmap
The FSB and CPMI programme to make cross-border payments faster, cheaper and more transparent.
These are the standards and targets that correspondent banks, regional systems and international bodies now expect payment systems to meet. Building your roadmap around them keeps your system interoperable abroad and avoids costly redesign later.
Is This Right for You?
- ☑You lead or advise on payment-system design or oversight
- ☑Your institution is planning RTGS renewal or fast payments
- ☑You need a modernisation plan your board can approve
Good to Know
Pitched at an advanced level; you should already work in payment systems operations, oversight or policy. The course builds on FMI fundamentals rather than repeating them. You leave with a modernisation roadmap for your jurisdiction, tested in peer review.
The Bottom Line
Return with a payment-system modernisation roadmap that is sequenced, governed and already tested under peer challenge.
